Waterlemon Cay, Johnny Horn Trail & Ruins

Waterlemon Cay - the BEST snorkelling on St John is around this little island!
I wish I had had the underwater camera when Winn was swimming with a huge sea turtle under the sparkly clear water.

Johnny Horn Trail Ruins

Big Termite Nest

Really cool flower (unknown variety)

A wasp nest hanging over our heads in the path

We begin the long Journey ( 5 hour round trip without side trips)

Winn & BIG termite nest

Incredible tree is known as the "Elephant Foot" tree,
but the real name is "Kapok" tree.

other ruins along the trail

same ruins - hey! I did go on this trip!

Incredible bee hive inside the ruins

Ruins along the trail

Sugar Plantation Ruins at end of trail (just short distance to the beach)

Petroglyph Trail & "Falls"

The path to the petroglyphs was lined on one side by an old stone wall (part of the ruins) and the other the plant known as "Mother-in-Law's Tongue" because it's long and wags a lot.

Winn along the path

Looking up to the top of the "Falls"
(which they are at rainy times of the year)

And on the level where we were, a small "pool" at the base of the falls

same "pool"

And continuing to look below our level, the "falls" continue down

The Real Cool stuff are the petroglyphs carved into the rock

same petroglyphs as at left

More petroglyphs

Winn sitting on big rocks at Petroglyph site - finally a break for lunch!
In the picture to the left Winn is watching a pair of mongoose fighting.
They are noisy squealers.
Didn't get a pic of them on this trip, though we've seen many.

Genti Bay Trail & Beach

Genti has a great swimming beach

Cinnamon Bay Ruins

This was a rather large group of ruins. Impressive.

the path through the woods took us by an old Danish cemetary

The Cinnamon Bay Trail was a rather shortish loop trail through the woods.
Winn & I were surprised at the strong, sort of sweet scent of the Cinnamon Bay leaf when we crushed a leaf in our hands.
I really liked the smell.
Now I want a tree on our land too. :)

more of the Danish cemetary

Trunk Bay
National Geographic says this is one of the top 10 beaches in the world.
(I think it was rated #5)

We started our snorkel to the right and out to the point, and went across to the island on the left, and all the way around it on the outside and then back to our spot. Great snorkel!
They have an underwater trail with signs about the underwater life & coral etc. but we did not follow that. We went backwards :)
Please see the underwater pics all the way at the end of this page from this snorkel.
