Car Rentals and Ferry Information

After you arrive at the airport on St Thomas (STT) you have a couple of car rental and ferry options.
Very important: You want to get a 4-wheel drive vehicle. If possible, try to arrange to arrive during daylight hours that first day to accustom yourself with the road up our hill.
And a reminder: we drive on the left here in the islands!

Passenger Ferry info:

1) Red Hook Ferry ($6.10 per passenger & $2 per luggage item):
First boats leave Cruz Bay at 6:00 AM
First boats leave Red Hook at 6:30 & 7:30 AM
After that boats leave every hour on the hour both ways.
Last boat leaves Cruz Bay at 11:00 PM
Last boat leaves Red Hook at midnight

July through November, '08 - NO 8 PM or 10 PM ferry leaving Red Hook
                                                   & NO 7 PM or 9 PM ferry leaving Cruz Bay

2) Charlotte Amalie Ferry ($11.10 per passenger & $2 per luggage item)
NEW SCHEDULE AS OF JULY '08 through November, '08:
Leaves St Thomas, Charlotte Amalie: 9 AM and 5:30 PM ONLY
Leaves Cruz Bay 7:15 AM and 3:45 PM ONLY

After November, '08, the regular schedule will be back:
Leaving St Thomas 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 4PM, and 5:30 PM
Leaving St John 7:15 AM, 9:15 AM, 11:15 AM, 1:15 PM, 2:15 PM, and 3:45 PM.

Option 2:
Many people find it more convenient (and economical) to pick up a rental car at the airport on St. Thomas, and to drive to the car ferry ("the barge") in Red Hook. My understanding is that only a few of the rental companies allow their cars to go to St John. The Budget Car rental does, and is located at the airport.

Dependable Car Rental will allow their cars to go to St John also, but does not provide service of vehicles on St John if it were to break down. They are 3 minutes from the airport, and offer shuttle to and from.

Car Ferry info:
Round trip with car is approximately $50, including passengers. There are three different companies with ferries, all leaving from the same location, with different schedules. One runs every half hour from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm from Red Hook. Some run on the hour (every two hours). The car ferry runs daily, 7 days a week. Weekends skip the first morning run each way.
Take note of the last ferry time to St John - 6:30 PM - and adjust your flights accordingly.

Rates:  $50 roundtrip, $30 one-way.
Mon-Sat:  Every hour on the half hour from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm
Sunday: Tthe first departure is at 7:30 am.

Rates:  $42 roundtrip, $27 one-way.

Mon-Sat:  6:00 am, 7:00 am, 7:30 am then Every hour on the half hour until 5:30pm, last departure is at 6:00 pm.
Sunday: The first departure is at 7:00 am.
